MAVERICKS RUN WILD IN 49-33 WIN OVER TYLER LEGACY RED RAIDERS

Home Sweet Home:  Welcome to Maverick Stadium.

On September 12th, 1980, Marshall hosted the Corsicana Tigers in the first game ever played at a brand new Maverick Stadium.  The Mavs won that game 27-0.

On September 12th, 2025, Marshall hosted the Tyler Legacy Red Raiders in the first game played in a newly renovated Maverick Stadium.  Marshall came away with a thrilling 49-33 victory.

After forcing Legacy to punt on their first possession, the Mavericks opened the game with an impressive 9 play drive that went 72 yards.  QB Alton Henderson got the score on a 25 yard run for a 7-0 lead with 3:52 left in the first.

It looked like Legacy was going to have a quick answer of their own as they raced to the Marshall 10 yard line thanks to a 52 yard run by Pearl Jackson.

However…the Maverick defense held on fourth down and goal at the 4 yard line to keep the Red Raiders out of the endzone.

After trading punts, Legacy got a huge return to set up shop at the Marshall 34 yard line.

But once again....the Mav defense was stellar when they stuffed Legacy on another 4th down attempt at the Marshall 25.

Henderson would get another big play, but this time with his arm as he found wide receiver Jamarion Sparks for a 53 yard touchdown pass.  The Mavs took a 14-0 lead with 4:35 before halftime.

Then things got wild.

Legacy got another big play with a 49 yard pass to get down to the Marshall 26 yard line.  Tyler would not be denied on this possession and got the score to pull within 14-7 with 1:58 left in the half.

Henderson had another quick answer as he tucked a keeper for a 60 yard touchdown to again push the Mav lead to two scores at 21-7 with 49 seconds remaining.

Not to be outdone, D'marian Malone of Legacy took the kickoff 94 yards for the score to make the score 21-13 after the missed PAT headed into the locker room.

Marshall opened the second half with an impressive drive that went 6 plays for 59 yards to take a 28-13 lead with 8;29 left in the third.

Legacy used more big plays of their own to keep themselves in the game as they went 71 yards on only 6 plays.  The 2-point attempt was no good to keep the score 28-19 with 6:59 showing in the third.

The Mavs went backwards on their next possession and was forced to punt.  Again.... the Raiders got a big return and started their possession at the Marshall 31.

Legacy would take advantage of the short field and got the score on just 2 plays.  The Marshall lead had evaporated to 28-26 with 4:45 left in the third stanza.

Marshall found their offense again and went 80 yards on 8 plays.  Alton Henderson took it in from 3 yards out to take a 35-26 lead with only 29 seconds left in the quarter.

Tyler Legacy would get yet another big play as they got a 72 yard touchdown pass to pull within 35-33 as the last play of the third.

Alton Henderson took the long play as a dare and went on a 72 yard touchdown run of his own.  Marshall went back up 42-33 with 10:56 left in the game.

There was some controversy on Legacy's next possession as an apparent incomplete pass was ruled a fumble.  Marshall got the 40 yard scoop and score to make it 49-33.

Henderson finished the night with 275 yards rushing on 25 carries with 5 touchdowns.  He also had 103 yards passing with a TD.

Marshall had 484 yards total.  381 on the ground.

The Mavs improve to (2-1) on the season while Legacy falls to (1-2).

Marshall will have their final  non-district tune up at home when they host the Palestine Wildcats.

The Mavs then get a bye week before heading to Mount Pleasant to open district play on October 3rd.
