The Marshall Mavericks were plagued with one blunder after another Friday night in a sloppy 38-13 loss to the Mount Pleasant TIgers at Sam Parker Field.

Special teams surrendered an astonishing 28 points to MP due to Maverick miscues in the kicking game.

The game started out looking like a defensive battle was about to ensue for the night.

Marshall's first possession resulted in a punt while MP's first drive ended in a fumble recovery by the Mavs.

The Tigers got on the board first with a wild call by the the referee.  MP had a pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Marshall:  caught and feet down into the end zone, but the ref called possession to the Tigers giving them a 7-0 early in the second quarter.

The first special teams gaffe followed when Marshall fumbled a punt snap to give MP the the ball at the Maverick 20.  The Tigers cashed in with the TD and a 14-0 lead with 8:52 left in the half.

The second special teams blunder was on the following kickoff when the Mavs failed to cover the kick and MP took possession at the Marshall 40.  That too turned into a touchdown and a 21-0 Tiger lead with 8;42 showing.

MP had managed three touchdowns in less than 3 minutes on the clock.

The third special teams mistake came when Marshall failed on a 50 yard FG attempt to end the half.  The kick was well short.... the TIgers scooped it up in the endzone and returned it 102 yards for the touchdown and the 28-0 lead headed into the locker room.

MP opened the second half with a drive that resulted in a 30 yard FG and a 31-0 lead.

The fourth...and final special teams good came when the Tigers blocked a Mav punt and ran it in for the score and the 38-0 lead.

Marshall finally got on the board to make it 38-7 with 1:47 left in the third.

With the Tiger bench on the field Marshall got another score to pull within 38-13 and that would be the final score.

Marshall's offensive woes continued on the night as they had just 174 yards rushing and a paultry 10 yards through the air for a total of 184 yards.

Mount Pleasant had 321 total yards on the night.

The Mavericks find themselves in dire straits concerning the playoffs.  They are (1-3) in district with Hallsville, MP, and Texas High all ahead of them in the standings.  Marshall will need wins over Greenville and Whitehouse....and get some help to have any hopes of making the playoffs.

Marshall will return home for a week 9 match-up Vs. (0-7) Greenville for homecoming.
