GRIM NIGHT FOR MAVERICKS IN TEXARKANA IN 27-0 SHUTOUT LOSS
Marshall dominated Texas High for the better part of 20 years in the 1980's and 90's, but since rejoining in 2002 the Tigers have dominated the Mavericks in like return.
Friday night was added to a litany of frustrating losses Marshall has suffered at the hands of Texarkana for the last 20 years.
Texas High entered the game on an uncharacteristic three game losing streak and was (1-3) headed into the contest. Marshall on the other hand was riding a two game win streak and found themselves at (2-2).
Grim Stadium has been a house of horrors for the Mavs for years and this game would prove to be no different as the Tigers used a prolific passing attack and a suffocating defense to end any hope of Marshall escaping with a victory.
Texas High opened the game with an impressive 78 yard drive that took just 2:47 off the clock and a quick 7-0 lead.
Marshall's first possession resulted in a punt after going three and out. Tigers started again at their own 31.
Texarkana used some trickery on their second possession with a huge reverse that quickly got them down to the Marshall 32.
The Mav defense was able to get the stop and the Tigers had to settle for a 34 yard field goal and a 10-0 lead with 4:18 left in the first.
Marshall put together a nice drive as they went 42 yards before failing to convert a fourth down at the THS 31.
The Tiger passing game lit the Marshall defense up again and jumped out to a 17-0 lead with 6:59 left before halftime.
Marshall again drove deep into Tiger territory, but gave up a sack/fumble on another failed fourth down.
The Maverick defense finally forced the Tigers into their first punt of the night....but a perfect kick by Texas High pinned Marshall at their own 1 yard line late in the half.
Unfortunately the Mav offense continued to struggle and was forced to punt deep in their own territory, giving the Tigers a chance for another score just before the break.
In spite of three straight quarterback sacks by the Marshall offense..... THS scored on a 22 yard touchdown pass with just 2 seconds left in the half to make it 24-0.
Marshall's offense was unable to get anything going to open the third quarter, going three and out and putning to open the second half.
The Mav defense tried desperately to keep Marshall in the game forcing another Tiger punt, but an interception ended the MHS drive. Texas High was able to convert the turnover into a field goal and 27-0 lead.
Another turnover ended a late Marshall threat and kept the shut out intact for Texarkana as they claimed the victory.
The win improved Texas High to (2-3) on the season but more importantly to (1-1) in district 6-5A play. Marshall falls to (2-3) on the season and also sits at (1-1) in district.
Marshall finished the game with 75 yards rushing and 75 yards passing for a total of 150 yards on the night.
Texas High had 254 yards passing and 200 rushing for a total of 454 yards.
Both teams will take week 6 off as the entire district will have a bye week.
Marshall will return home to host Hallsville in a must-win game while Texas High will travel to Nacogdoches to take on the Dragons.
