MAVERICKS FALL TO LOBOS IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE

The Marshall Mavericks and the Longview Lobos have been battling it out on the football field for over 100 years, dating back to 1909.​​​​​

While Longview has dominated the series for the last 25 seasons, the 2025 game proved to be more competitive than most prognosticators had predicted.

The Marshall defense had a stellar night, holding the Lobos to only 2 touchdowns on the night.

But the Lobo defense was able to hold Marshall to only one score as the Mavericks fell to Longview 20-7.

The Maverick defense held on a 4th down at midfield on Longview's first possession.  The offense quickly moved downfield thanks to a 45 yard run by QB Alton Henderson.  He later found wide receiver Russell in the corner of the endzone for the 7-0 with 6:43 left in the opening stanza.

Marshall forced a Lobo punt and fumble on Longview's next two possessions, but was unable to capitalize on either.

Longview's fourth possession would see the Lobos move 70 yards on 12 plays to tie the game 7-7 with only 3:22 left in the half.

Then....as always seems the case Vs. Longview...disaster struck.

Marshall fumbled on their next offensive play, giving Longview the ball at the Maverick 15 yard line.

It took only 2 plays and just like that the Lobos had a 14-7 late in the second quarter.

Then...as always seems the case Vs. Longview...disaster struck again.

Marshall fumbled on their second consecutive play to give the ball to Longview at the Marshall 17 yard line.

The Mavs defense stiffened and held the Lobos to a field goal as Marshall's 7-0 lead had evaporated to a 17-7 deficit in a matter of minutes.  

Neither team would find the endzone in the third quarter as both defenses put on a clinic. 

Marshall got inside the Longview 40 yard line twice in the second half and was unable to put any points on the board in spite of remaining within striking distance of the Lobos.

Longview put the game away with a late field goal to take a 20-7 lead with 4:30 left in the game.

The Mavericks finished with only 115 yards of total offense while the Lobos finished with 252.

QB Alton Henderson had 59 yards on 16 carries.  He was 4-9 passing for 45 yards and a touchdown.

6A Longview improved to (2-0) on the season while Marshall falls to (1-1).

It was the 115th game of the series.  Longview has won 10 in a row.  Marshall's last win came in 2015.

Marshall now turns their attention to the Tyler Legacy Red Raiders, who beat Tyler High in the Rose City Classic.  Marshall beat Tyler in week one 43-42.

The Mavs will finally have  their home opener in the newly renovated Maverick Stadium.

Marshall defeated Legacy last season at Rose Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7:30.
