The scoreboard at Sam Parker Field took the evening off Friday night during Marshall's district opener against the Mount Pleasant Tigers.
The Maverick and Tiger offenses also took the night off as a monster defensive battle unfolded in a hard-fought 7-3 Marshall victory. The win improves Marshall to (4-1) on the season and (1-0) in district 7-5A play. The Tigers fall to (1-1) in loop play.
Both defenses put the clamps down for four quarters in a game that featured as many punts as there were first downs.
Marshall received the opening kickoff and got a quick first down to move into Tiger territory. However, the MP defense would stuff the Mavs on 4th down to take over at their own 47.
The Mav defense would use a huge quarterback sack to stall MP and force them to punt the ball back to Marshall.
The Mav offense lost yardage on their second possession and was forced to punt in the shadow of their own endzone, giving the ball back to the Tigers at the Marshall 46.
The Tigers then put together their best series of the game, driving 45 yards to the Marshall one yard line.
MP had four shots to get the ball in the end zone and failed each time as Marshall stuffed their 4th down attempt to keep the game scoreless 0-0.
Marshall took over at their own 5, but wasn't able to move the sticks and was forced to punt again, giving the ball to the Tigers at their own 49.
The Tigers again got inside the Marshall 10, but had to settle for a 20 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 10:30 left till halftime.
The Mav defense again punished the MP offense with another QB sack to force a punt that would give Marshall the ball at midfield.
Neither offense could move the sticks as both teams closed out the half trading a pair of punts.
Marshall ended the half with only two first downs.
The Mavs showed signs of life in the third when they drove from their own 14 yard line to midfield. But once again.... was unable to get any further.
Marshall got a huge punt, pinning the Tigers inside their own 10 yard line.
Mount Pleasant then gifted Marshall with a fumble that the Mavs were able to scoop up and return 15 yards for the touchdown and the 7-3 lead with 2:39 left in the third.
Shortly after the score, the MP scoreboard called it a night and shut off and never returned the rest of the contest.
Like the the scoreboard....neither offense could be seen either.
Marshall drove down to the MP 39 yard line looking to put a dagger in the Tiger's heart, but failed to convert the 4th down to keep their hopes alive.
Another QB sack by the Mav defense killed another MP drive and gave the ball back to Marshall.
Yet another huge punt for Marshall pinned MP on their own 16 and a penalty set them back to the 8. They stalled and was forced to punt from their own 5, giving the ball to the Mavs at the Tiger 45.
Another huge drive looked to nail the coffin shut as Marshall moved down to the MP 8. Looking to click the time away, the Mavs were forced to turn the ball over on downs giving the Tigers one last gasp with seconds left.
The Red Brick Wall would stand tall in the final minute of the game and preserve the 7-3 victory.
Marshall finished the game with 158 total yards. 119 on the ground and 39 through the air.
MP finished with 137 total yards. 103 on the ground and 34 through the air.
