LIGHTNING STRIKES MAVERICKS IN 61-13 BLOWOUT LOSS TO LOBOS
Marshall and Longview met for the 116th time in 117 years Friday night at Lobo stadium for the annual grudge match.
While lightning was striking in the Longview area from summer storms, lightning was also striking the Mavericks in the form of the Lobo offense.
Longview wasted no time as they opened the game with a quick 5 play drive that went 65 yards for a 7-0 lead.
Marshall returned the favor with a 70 yard drive of their own that resulted in a touchdown and a 7-7 tie with 3:56 left in the first quarter.
A lightning delay then sent the teams into the locker room for over an hour until the storm passed. Little did the Mavs know....the storm was just getting started.
Longview wasted no time after the delay getting into the end zone again for a lightning-quick 14-7 lead with 1:53 left in the first stanza.
Marshall then gifted the Lobos with a fumble on their own 22 yard line which Longview then turned into a 22 yard TD pass and a 20-7 lead.
Lightning struck again for the Lobos when they returned a punt for an electrifying touchdown and a stunning 26-7 lead.
Another Marshall punt set the Lobos up at the Maverick 35 yard line and a quick pass to a wide open wide receiver made it 34-7 before halftime.
Longview would tack on two more scores to take a commanding 48-7 lead into the locker room.
The Mav offense continued to struggle in the second half and Longview kept the gas on the pedal for a 55-7 lead before the third ended.
Marshall would add another score against the Lobo bench to make it 55-13 late in the game, but Longview would tack on one more for good measure to make the final of 61-13.
The Mavs finished the night with 196 yards rushing with Doug Johnson taking 114 yards.
Longview finished with 194 yards rushing and 240 passing.
The Mavs fall to (0-2) on the season. They will have their first home game this Friday when they host 6A Garland.
