MAVS EXPLODE FOR 56-0 WIN OVER JACKSONVILLE INDIANS AT TOMATO BOWL

Marshall pulled together a nearly perfect night for both offense and defense Friday night in a 56-0 stomping of the Jacksonville Indians at the Historic Tomato Bowl.

The win improves the Mavericks to (5-2)  on the season and more importantly (2-1) in district play.

The offensive slumber that had seen Marshall's offense fail to score in two consecutive games Vs. Mt Pleasant and Texas High ended with sudden jolt of energy.

Marshall opened the game with an impressive 69 yard drive that ended with 4th down Tush-push that finally broke the offensive drought that had plagued the team since the Palestine game.   The lead was 7-0 after the drive that took 6:20 off the clock.

After forcing an Indian punt, it looked as if the Mavs were about to take a quick 14-0 lead when they drove to the Jax 10, but a fumble recovered by the tribe ended the threat.

Shockingly, the Indians went for a 4th down at their own 27 and failed, giving the ball back to the Mavs nearly inside the red zone.

RB Ashtin Sparks made the Tribe pay with a 13 yard run that made it 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Jacksonville then gifted the Marshall defense with a fumble that the Mavs returned to the Indian 38 yard line.

Things turned nasty as the Tribe got flagged for two gruesome face-mask penalties committed against Marshall QB Alton Henderson.

The Mavs made them pay as they found pay-dirt to make it 21-0 with 3:45 left before halftime.

Another turnover on downs by Jax gave the Mavs one last score with a 35 yard touchdown pass to push the score to 28-0 with 30 seconds left until the intermission.

Marshall picked up where they left off in the third quarter with two more scores to expand the lead to 42-0.

The Mav defense would join the scoring frenzy with a pick six by Jamarion Sparks that he returned 42 yards for the 49-0 lead.

Doug Johnson wrapped up the scoring with a 69 yard run to close out the game 56.

Marshall finished with 361 yards rushing and 97 passing for 458 total yards.

Jacksonville finished with 76 yards rushing and 87 yards passing for 163 total yards.
