COVER OF DCTF 2022

The annual rite of waiting for Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine has become almost  as big as the games themselves.

Every summer DCTF predicts every district race for every classification of football in the state of Texas.

For 2022 the staff has predicted Marshall to finish as the runner-up in district 8-5A Division II behind defending champion Texas High.

The publication picks Texarkana to repeat as the district champion with Marshall settling for second place.

They predict Nacogdoches will finish third with Mount Pleasant settling in fourth, rounding out the playoff representatives for the district.

They have Pine Tree in fifth, just missing out on the post-season with Hallsville and Whitehouse rounding out the standings.

In the 2022 realignment, the University interscholastic leagued moved the East Texas district out of region III and into region II.

This means first and second round playoff games will be against Dallas metroplex schools instead of Houston/South East Texas areas.

This will result in much shorter drives for 3rd and 4th place teams that have to travel for first round playoff games.

Instead of first round games Vs. Huntsville, Montgomery, and Bryan area.... it will be Crandall, Denison, Greenville, Lucas Lovejoy, Mesquite Poteet, Princeton, and Terrell.

This will make for shorter playoff drives in the early round of the playoffs.

The season will kick off on August 26th for Marshall when they host the Tyler High Lions.

District 8-5A Rivals: Texas High, Pine Tree, Nacogdoches, Mount Pleaant, Whitehouse, and Hallsville

Every season it seems Marshall pieces together one of the toughest 5A Division II non-district slates in the state of Texas.

Through the years the Mavs have entertained the likes of 5A Division I schools Longview, Shadow Creek, McKinney North, and New Caney.  They have also faced off against 6A Tyler Legacy and 4A powerhouse Carthage.  Toss in Sheveport Byrd, Airline, and Corsicana to boot.

The 2022 schedule continues that tradition as the Mavericks will face off against TWO preseason #1 teams and another 5A Division I annual playoff contender that's ranked in the top 25.

Marshall will open the season against their ancient rivals from Tyler High, the Mav's oldest rival in football, dating back to 1908.  The Lions are ranked i#24 in Dave Campbell's preseason poll for 5A Division I.

Longview will come calling in week two, as the Lobos are the preseason #1 team for 5A Division I.  They are one of the favorites for a state title in 2022.

Carthage will be the next step in the gauntlet  as the Bulldogs are the preseason #1 team for 4A Division II.   The Bulldogs have become one of the winningest  programs in the state of Texas, having won 5 state championships since 2011.

Sandwiched between Longview and Carthage is 4A power Henderson.

The Mavs will then enter district play against Pine Tree.

Texas High has been a top 10 team in 5A Division II ever since dropping down in 2020.

Iron sharpens Iron and the Mavs are looking to make some noise in 2022.
