HIGH HOPES IN 2021 FOR MAVS

To say the 2020 football season was a disappointment for the Mavericks would be an understatement.

Marshall entered the season ranked as high as #13 in some 5A Division II polls. However, it all came crashing down with a (5-5) season.
The Mavs missed out on the playoffs for the first time since 2012, snapping a seven year streak of post-season appearances that included two region semifinals in 2015 and 2018.

Prior to 2020, Marshall had won 25 consecutive district games dating back to 2016.
The Mavericks had high hopes headed into the season thanks to a bevy of defensive players that were returning to the squad from 2019's district title team.

However......offensive line woes, turnovers, and upstarts in Pine Tree and Nacogdoches plagued the Mavs more than COVID-19 in 2020.

Inconsistent offensive play most of the season kept Marshall from competing for the district championship in spite of a stellar defensive unit most of the year.

In spite of the struggles, Marshall had some bright spots in 2020.

Marshall quarterback Brent Burris finished with 1,581 yards passing with 14 TD passes and 8 INTS.

Running Back Dominique Williams finished with 699 yards on the season with 7 touchdowns. He also had 205 yards receiving.

The Mavs finished 9-5A in fifth place and (3-4) in district play. It was the most district losses since 2012.

Marshall will return to the drawing board for the 2021 season.

The team is expected to have spring football for the first time since 2018. 2019 was nixed because of the Coronavirus.

7 on 7 is likely to return in 2021 as well.

FRESHMEN/JV WIN FINAL GAMES
The 9th grade Red team closed out the season with a 44-0 win over the Nacogdoches Dragons.

They finish the season at (6-3) overall and (5-2) in district play.
The Junior Varsity also beat Nac 34-6 to improve to (4-5) on the season and (4-3) in 9-5A play.

In spite of how the 2020 season ended for Marshall, the future appears to be bright for the Mavericks headed into the 2021 season.

The Mavs will be looking for a quarterback this spring and the race to find a starer could be a fantastic one.
Michael Olvera and Collier Slone are expected to be in a battle for the top spot.
Olvera played at the varsity level in sparse play in 2020 behind startered Brent Burris before a hand injury ended his season.

Slone lead the Maverick freshman team to a (6-3) record and (5-2) in district play.

Running back JQ Davis is expected to have a big season after a breakout '20 sophomore year.

The biggest job for Marshall headed into the offseason is rebuilding the offensive line, which was a point of struggle for the Mavs all season long in 2020.

Stay tuned for updates for spring football and 7 on 7 action this summer.

The 2020 schedule changes made for COVID-19 will remain in place for 2021.

This means Marshall will open the season in the Houston area Vs. New Caney for their kickoff classic.
The Mavs will hit the road again to take on Longview.

McKinney North will then visit Marshall to close out non-district play.

Marshall will take a week off before they travel to Pine Tree to open district 9-5A play.

The Mavs will host Jacksonville next..... likely for homecoming.

A critical road game to Texas High will then await the Mavs at Grim Stadium.

Whitehouse will then travel to Maverick Stadium for another big battle and Pink Out.

A road game to Mount Pleasant will be next.
The home portion of the schedule will close out with Senior night as Marshall hosts rival Hallsville.

The regular season will close out with a huge road game at Nacogdoches.
