COVID-19 DELAYS SEASON KICKOFF

MULTIPLE SCHEDULE CHANGES ANNOUNCED

The Coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on sports schedules for since February.

After shutting down high school basketball, softball and baseball last spring, it seems that football is now under the gun this fall.

The UIL has announced that 5A and 6A schools will delay the start of the season until September 25th.  Schools 4A and below will start as originally planned.

This sent coaches across the state scrambling for schedule changes.

Luckily for Marshall, the announcement only forced the Mavs to change one game from their previously released schedule.

The Carthage Bulldogs (4A) had to be dropped from the schedule because of the late start.   5A McKinney North will take their place.  It will be the first ever meeting of the two programs.

The only other change was switching the season opener Vs. New Caney to a home game at Maverick Stadium.

The late start will have Marshall playing district games until December 4th Vs. Nacogdoches.

The playoffs will begin on December 11th/12th and the state championships for 6A and 5A schools will be in mid January.  Unprecedented to be sure.

The remainder of the schedule is unchanged.

Three of Marshall's first four games will be played in the friendly confines of Maverick Stadium.

Even with the loss of defending state champion Carthage from the schedule, Marshall has pulled together a tough non-district slate.

New Caney was (10-1) last season.  Longview was (11-1) and McKinney North was (10-2).  A combined (31-4) last season.

District play will be tougher in 2020 as Pine Tree is expected to be one of the most prolific offenses in the state this season.

The addition of Texas High into the district immediately made the road to the district championship tougher.

And annual playoff contender Whitehouse can't be overlooked as well.

Up and coming Nacogdoches and Mount Pleasant will be keeping people on their toes in 9-5A as well.

Jacksonville and Hallsville have struggled as of late, but the Tomato Bowl is never an easy place to win and Hallsville will be sporting a new coach and a new look in 2020.

Stadium capacities are expected to be held to 50% this season because of the pandemic.  This could make getting a seat at games a challenge.   Stay tuned for more information.

DISTRICT WINNING STREAK CON'T

PROGRAM-RECORD STREAK DATES TO 2016

The Mavericks are currently in the midst of their longest district winning streak in program history.

They currently have  25 game district winning streak dating back to 2016.

Marshall is (31-2) in district play since 2015.   (35-5) since 2014.

During this streak, the Mavs have won three consecutive district championships and four in the last five seasons.

Last year's team shattered the streak held by the 1987-1990 Mavs that won 18 consecutive district games.

The good fortunes began in September of 2016 with a 56-13 win over Sulphur Springs.  SInce then the Mavs have rattled off 25 consecutive.

The streak will be tested in 2020 thanks to an explosive Pine Tree squad, a Texas High program with plenty of pedigree, and a Whitehouse program that has quietly built themselves into an annual playoff team.

Marshall will have a target on their backs this season as every team in 9-5A will be looking to spoil the Mav's streak.

The Mavs have been to the playoffs 7 consecutive seasons and 13 of the last 16 seasons.  They have advanced to at least the third round  of the playoffs 5 of those 13 seasons.

Coach Greidl and staff will be looking to keep things headed in the right direction as Marshall looks to make some noise in 2020.
